Also know like SATYR;
In Roman mythology, fauns are place-spirits (genii) of untamed woodland.
Romans connected their fauns with the Greek satyrs, wild and orgiastic drunken followers of Bacchus (Greek Dionysus).

However, fauns and satyrs were originally quite different creatures. Both have horns and both resemble goats below the waist, humans above; but originally fauns had goat-like hooves, satyrs human feet.
The Romans also had a god named Faunus and goddess Fauna, who, like the fauns, were goat-people.

Really bad, cheap, and cheesy design. Why do so many folks WANT this?

This isn't meant to be a rant. I'm really curious as to [i]why[/i] this exists.

It's commonplace and a common joke among designers when clients suggest things that are bad design ideas. But in the past couple years I've ran into this in increasing amounts (both amounts of clients and the amount of horrid design requests per client).

I'm speaking of more than just a poor font color. It's like they saw a funny collection of the worst web sites and business cards designed by high school students in 1997 and wet their pants with excitement. These designs don't target their markets or present an image that fits their branding.

- Is the market so saturated with remedial corny designs that folks think that's what they should aim for, against better judgment and advice?

- Are there too many tools out there now to make easy unnecessary effects?

- Can I blame myspace and crappy-looking blogs? Do clients unconsciously want to gravitate towards that to feel they're in the loop?

- Do they think the flashing text and a rotating logo will draw people's attention? Or that anyone is impressed by that in this day and age?

- Are there hidden cameras following me? Really! When the reputable business client asked for a [i]swimming fish floating over the website and a cursor that shoots sparks[/i], I swear it was a joke.

7D or 5D?

I have no money, but I plan to have a whole lot some day! That being the case, I like to dream. Right now, I am really feeling the desire to get a better camera body. Not being greedy in my dreams, I am not looking at the 1D.

So the question comes down to the 7D or the 5D Mark II. The 7D is like $1,000 cheaper. As far as I can tell, it has some advantages over the 5D Mark II, but mainly just in video. The 5D is a full frame sensor, which seems neat.

Video doesn't really matter to me, as I would probably only use it for quick documentation of shoots or something. So is a full frame sensor worth $1000? Are there any other drastic changes that make the 5D better or worse?

Converting to B&W - Calibration Question

Hi, all,

Need a little help here. Recently, when I use the PS/3 B&W tool, it seems to me that my pictures have a faint sepia tint to them. I can't tell if it's just a trick of my eyes or not, but they don't look *true* black and white. I've looked at some of my shots on other sites that I've posted, and I think I see the same phenomenon.

Here's a shot that seems slightly sepia to me:

[image]http://rookery5.aviary.com/storagev12/2494500/2494769_cca1.jpg[/image]

So, I went to color balance and increased the Cyan and Magentas to rectify and this looks better to me.

[image]http://rookery5.aviary.com/storagev12/2494500/2494766_4b32.jpg[/image]

Am I going crazy ? Could my monitor be displaying incorrectly ? I checked the color balance of it (it's an Acer) and red, blue and yellow are all at 50, so that *seems* to be okay.

Is it me, or is it in my head or is my monitor ?

Help with Submersion Techniques

Hi all! I really enjoyed looking at the recent submersion contest entries and wondering at the skill it took to make a convincing view both above and below the water. For some time I've had a project in mind that would require doing something similar, but my first attempts at it look crude. I've asked some worthy Worthians for some pointers, and while helpful, I only felt comfortable asking for brief comments.

So for those of you with some good submersion techniques, I'd love if you could weigh in with some methods for creating a convincing look. I'm only really talking about the above/below/waterline look - I can do color matching, lighting, etc. But I've had a devil of a time getting a convincing surface/underwater/waterline combination and need some tips.

Thanks tons!

Need some help with RAM

Hi folks. I have a situation that is driving me bugs and I hope you guys can help me figure it out.

Here's the deal:

About 3 weeks ago I put four 2gb sticks of RAM in my machine. Got them from Crucial.com. (I'd had

2gbs before but took those out and gave them away so the 4 new ones would all match.) So here I

am with 8gbs and it was fabulous. Right off the bat not only my CS4 but also my

Photoshop7 both recognized the 8gbs and everything just flew.

Then a few days ago I noticed that PS7 was sluggish and, sure enough, when I checked I saw that it

was only seeing 2gbs again. I know PS7 isn't even supposed to see it but it did and it was great. The
CS4 is still fine but I just don't like it as well as 7, call me crazy but there it is.

Does anybody know how I can get 7 to see the 8gbs again. I have no problem going into the

registry but have no clue where to go. I have spent days searching for an answer but haven't found an

answer.
Searching is an art in itself and I am not very skilled at it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Here is my setup:

Clarification on CODE: Paper Art

Hello, your ever-ephemeral friend sk here!

A quick question on the current CODE: Paper Art contest. The contest description says that preprinted designs/patterns are not allowed, but "Randomly printed paper is fine...(think newspaper or gift wrap)." Does this mean that it would be acceptable to selectively cut pieces from a source to get a particular color, design, etc.; or should emphasis be on how the paper itself is formed?

Hopefully my question makes sense. I can't think of how to word it better, but hopefully I can clarify if needed. Thanks!

Scandal! Admins overthrown! Worth hierarchy has come to an end in Multimedia! OMG WE HAVE A WINNER!

I bet THAT got your attention! :D

And I did not even lie! Yes, it's true. Who needs Multimedia Admins? Power to the People! Will of the Worthians, rule! Sigh no more, oppressed creatures, bound by the unyielding hand of the omnipotent Admins! Stop your wailing and moaning, trying to squish your already fickle creativity into the iron-hard rules of contests decided by some faraway, imposing figure.

Now YOU decide!

Illustration Revolution was yesterday. Today is CODE:

[b]CONTEST DEMOCRACY![/b]

That's right. You are going to decide what the next multimedia contest is going to be.

Here are the rules:

- You will have seven (yes, seven!) contests to choose from.
- Each contest will be named in one of the seven following posts, along with a short description.
- "Like" the contest you want to be run next by clicking the little heart next to the contest. When the heart turns red, you have cast your vote.
- The contest with the most hearts will be run next.

It is as easy as that. And it gets even better!

How?

The first five slots (postings) will be contests suggested by Multimedia Staff.
The second following slots are YOURS!
Send me a PM with a Title and a short contest description. The first two PMs will be put down for election as contest choice 6 and 7.

Come and play. Today is CODE day!

FANTASY2.0 X: Big Tech ----------------------------------------------

(more when I get the old thread back)

Entrants should build any fantasy elements of their entry from scratch using
non-fantasy sources (ie. DO NOT USE multimedia created by another artist like:
Paintings, CGI, Renderings, Fantasy Sculpture, Photomontages, Movie/TV images
or Toys). Entrants MAY USE photos of scientifica, antiquities and
renaissance-faire-like costumes. VOTERS should knock extra points off of entries
in violation and particularly obvious abuses should be flagged for disqualification.
See upcoming contests page for further clarification.

As fantasy art is rarely photographic in nature all images are "to be
judged on consistent style not necessarily photorealism", the goal of
the contest is to create cool art, not a hoax. See the other fantasy H2H's for style hints.
Other regular photoshop rules apply with some wiggle
room for fabulous pictures containing images of strong willed women with questionable fashion sense.
