In the spring of 1982, Jose Ramon Carillo, owner of a little grocery shop in Teacapan, Mexico, is rudely woken from his afternoon nap by a piercing scream. He is on his feet in a heartbeat, grabs his baseball bat and runs over to the back of the shop, where he finds Lucilla Maria Rodriguez, pale as a ghost and staring at the stacks of preserved foods. Following her gaze he finds himself looking at a jar containing a human foetus, neatly stacked in between the pickled vegetables.
