It was 50 years ago that two New Mexico National Guardsmen lost their lives, and 12 others were injured when their evening meal was interrupted by a bolt of lightning that killed two men outright. Spc.4 Jose Severino Salazar, a native of Pecos, NM was a member of 181st AAA Detachment (operational), an Albuquerque area Guard unit. The Battery sat down for their evening meal at Hueco Firing Range Number 2, around 6 pm on Monday, August 12, 1959 during a torrential rainstorm. The lightning struck Salazar first, who was standing near the tent entrance. All of the Guardsmen were members of the 111th AAA Brigade and had begun their annual training on the day the tragedy occurred.
