The mouse looked nervously around. He knew he was in danger. He had wandered away from his nest in search of some berries that only ripen for a few days each year. The berries were delicious but now he had lost his way.Fang, the Wood Dragon sensed he was not alone in the clearing. The brown and gold leaves on the floor of the forest were effective camouflage for insects and the other creatures that made these woods their home. But his strongest sense was not sight; it was smell. Fang knew the scent of a mammal and that is what he identified on the moist air.His head turned to the source of the odor. Even though he could not see any details of the tiny quivering body, he knew it was a frightened mouse from the elements in the scent. Unlike a human’s primitive sensory organs, a Wood Dragon was able to identify species, emotions, health, sex and size from a single sniff.Fang also knew he was the source of fear. This mouse was scared for his life.He turned his head another direction. This was the path the mouse had taken to the clearing. He knew the mouse’s den was a short distance down the track and that the creature had not been scared when he came this way. He turned back to the mouse and identified the sweet berry smell now. This was the same reason the little Dragon was visiting the clearing. He had eaten his fill of the wondrous berries and was now preparing to sleep off the lethargy brought on by the feast. But he would never relax with the panicked mouse nearby. Sighing, Fang knew he would have to do something before his nap.Faster than a blink of an eye, he swooped down and pressed the mouse to the ground with this scaly claw. He could feel the racing heartbeat through the sensitive nerve endings in his palm. He leaned down and grasped the mouse’s tail in his strong teeth. In less than a second he was over the mouse’s nest. The young Dragon opened his powerful jaw and let the mouse drop. He heard the soft thud and the scrambling feet as he turned and flew back to his nap spot. He immediately fell asleep. The mouse pulled some leaves and twigs over the entrance to his den. It took several minutes for his heartbeat to return to a normal pace. But soon the same feast-induced sleepiness overcame him and he lay down on his bed of feathers and moss. He slept.
