While this is probably my strangest self-portrait, it is definitely one of my favorites. It may also be one that speaks truest of myself... take that how you will.
My visual interest in playing cards is rooted in the multiple and the mirror image. In face cards, or court cards, these two elements combine with the human body, and this admixture has been the source and site of my investigations. This image is one in a series of three, reinterpreting the images of a King, Queen, and Knave. Each self-portrait is carefully constructed with a Baroque sense of over-packing and Pop receptivity– an idolatrous relationship between common objects and the meanings they possess. My photographs rely on a space in which I can simultaneously create and disguise my identity, through performances of overlapping cultural references.
Look into my eyes and you will see the stories of my life.
