African singing drum, sometimes called a talking drum. Nearly 2 feet tall, the two-headed drum is hand-carved from wood in the shape of an hourglass. There are twisted leather strips connecting the the outer edges of both drumheads. When you hold the drum under your arm and beat either head with the drumstick, squeezing and releasing the leather strips produces a full range of tones, you can make the drum sing. There are seeds inside the hollow, which rattle like rain against the insides of the leather drum heads, and brass African bells tied into the twisted leather strips, producing even more music.
