Their normal forth player, St. Patrick, was under the weather....so Santa extended an invitation to their mutual friend the Tooth Fairy. However it became abundantly clear quite quickly...Larry, the Tooth Fairy did not know how to play poker!

PLEASE FULL-VIEW! (Sorry to nag, but I swear it looks better, despite jPEG compression effects) A card I made for a friend this year. On the print-out, the explosion guy was actually on a spring that popped out at the reader. I had lots of fun making it. Merry Christmas! :)

This was done in oils at 13" x 19" then cropped and resized. It has a complete underpainting of the brown then a wet on wet with the other colors blending them on the canvas. I used paint thinner, cotton ear swabs and a white cotton cloth to lift out the lighter areas. I then digitally shot it and took it into Adobe Photoshop CS to add the type and solid red and green fields on the top and bottom. I then printed it out on 4" x 6" high gloss photo paper and put a thin clear coat onto the surface to protect the ink. Prior to printing the front side, I printed a postcard type layout on the backside of the paper so I could send them in the mail.

The Chinese animal-zodiac goes through a 12 year cycle. For example 2001, the year Bush took over, was the "Year of the Rat" ;) ... and 2006 is the "Year of the Dog".

In Asia it's mandatory etiquette to send a New Year's / Season's Greetings card to all one's friends and business aquaintances.

Aside from the Escher-style arrangement of the dogs, there's also deliberate cleverness hidden in the number of dogs. There are 18, representing both "heisei 18 nen" (18th year of peace, the way Japan counts years) and also representing 12 months + 6 years (as in 2006).

The writing on the left says "Heisei 18 nen, inu" which means "18th year of peace, year of the dog". The 4 other characters say "Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter" and are surounded by colors matching the seasons.

Each dog is numbered except for #1, which is simply labelled phonetically "wan". This's a pun on the sound of "one" and on the onomatopoeia "wan". "Wan" is the Japanese equivalent of "woof".
