Thought I'd get us started for a new year! Following on from last year, the rules of the game are:

  • Please keep your file sizes reasonable. 200K should cover it. If you want to show larger versions, link.

  • Please keep your images under 760 pixels wide to avoid having to scroll

  • Do not post anything you ever want to use in a contest

For the benefit of posterity we bring you:
the Original WDYST

Here's a couple of rejected pictures from todays 30 day challenge shoot:

Ooh, I really like the second one!

Craigr1978 said 3 years ago 1/2/2009 3:26:59 PM EDT

I'm with thephrog, I like that second one! The blur really pulls you eye into the focal point of the picture.

SigloV said 3 years ago 1/2/2009 5:34:54 PM EDT

I like them both but the second one does rawk!

Here's a couple of my rejects from today...

That first one is cool, I'm a sucker for pictures of signs for some reason, and that one really floats my boat.

i LIKED BOTH PICTURES SIGLOV

ahutty said 3 years ago 1/2/2009 7:42:03 PM EDT

Me too. Those are both great shots Siglov.

Here's a shot I took on New Year's day. I tried out some tone mapping to deal with the distracting light coming through the tree (left), I don't think it helped much though.

I love Wood pigeons, was this one in the wild? Your tone mapping has bought out some of the stunning colours.

Yes it was a wild one, it was at the Morere hot springs camping ground. It stayed there for ages, so I could set up my tripod and muck around for ages taking as many photos as I liked. This was my favourite.

Every Friday night at our house is "Jessie Night" - my sister Jessica (who has severe autism) comes for dinner. She has an obsession with playing cards and spends hours shuffling and staring at them. Her eyes get really big, then squinty, she sticks out her tongue and laughs. I took about 100 pictures with my zoom lens and these were in the cutest bunch.

She looks very intent on what she is doing, and very content too. Nice study shots!

Great shots Cap. The third picture has captured such a wonderful expression of your sister. Did you get a good one of her laughing?

Here's a couple. Most of them laughing look more like she's screaming - she gets a really crazy expression on her face, but it's total pleasure instead of pain. :)

Really cool lens baby pics! How much control do you have over where the sweet spot lands? I've heard they're pretty hard to shoot with.

A couple of rejects from yesterday's "30 days of" shoot with the 105mm lens...

Rejected because I'm not happy with the colours... but at least I got my focusing right before he moved!
[Photos must be 75K or less

And this is possibly a little too abstract... its a station bill-board, and is a good indicator that we're in a recession!

I like both expressions. but the second picture is my favourite. Thank you for sharing those pics with us.

Re lensbaby:
You have pretty much total control over where the sweet spot is, the lens is basically attached to a piece of rubber that acts sort of like a spring and theres a ring around it that enables you to point the sweet spot more or less anywhere.

And 'hard to use' is an understatement of biblical proportions! ;-) Focus is acheived by pulling in the lens towards the body, which must be done with your finger tips, and if you've got the sweet spot off centre naturally this also means focus distance is different on one side of the lens from the other and so on. Very tough to work with.

The new versions of the lensbaby incorporate a ring type focus mechanism and a lockable sweet spot which I would imagine would make life infinitely easier. I'm think of getting a new one, as they also incorporate a switchable element, so I could change from plastic lens to double glass to pinhole etc.. for even more effects.

Sounds like the reversing ring I got for Christmas. A hard day's shooting, for sure!

Today's rejects...

This one just felt too cluttered - but I do like the shopping cart...
