If they are clearly way off then they can have great effect, I think the only problem is when they look like they should have been straight/flat and they are not quite. Actually, I learnt that here on Worth, SigloV once said something similar somewhere and it made a lot of sense to me ;-)

The old adage that you need to know the rules then you can break them springs to mind! That's why I always used to enjoy the rules based beginners contests on here, you learn a lot!

Nice to see people being sent up to work on the roof with hi-viz jackets so they don't get hit by cars but no safty harness in case they slip.

The Hi-Viz jacket is so that they don't get hit by cars after they plunge down onto the road!

@ercolano;

I personally like the color version of the gate image better. Not because of the colors, but because of the contrast. The light causes great shapes, shadows (on the street) and silhouettes. In the B&W version it almost looks like a HDR where a lot of global contrast is lost.

That first photo is gorgeous by the way.

A gig my friend played:

I love the coincidental composition of the green guitar player, the blue out of focus drummer, and the bright red LED on the left.

ufosgalore

The red dot doesn't do much for me, but what I really like is how you've cropped the head off the guitarist and that is mirrored by the headless drummer in the background...

That glorious 40's underground artwork, the classic London architecture of the period, the red phone box. There is so much good potential there. Well spotted.

But the modern railing, bike racks, traffic on the left, they all detract, I think. I challenge you to pop out again tomorrow lunch and reshoot with different angles, maybe standing a bit to the left, maybe crouched down with the camera pointing slightly up and off level, sign in the bottom right phone box in the top left, maybe.....

Yeah well, OK, that is how I would have looked, not you. But I challenge you all the same :D

Off level rules!

I agree. This could do with a nice vanishing point (preferably in a corner of the frame) that's not hidden by the phone booth.

But that's just my way of doing things.

Go get 'em, MrN.

It didn't snow yesterday...

What it did was pour rain all day along with a fog thick enough to cut with a knife.

Definitely better, thanks for the critique guys.

(I tried, but I couldn't bring myself to shoot off level.)

I also shot this, which I'm rather pleased with:

I've done a fair bit of work to it, but I shot it with this look in mind.

Great improvement!

the second one is nice too. the worn textures are really interesting. I would love to see some more pavement though, to give the building something to stand on.

ercolano said 3 years ago 2/12/2009 9:23:49 AM EDT

Love it like that, Good job, the pedestrian adds a great touch to it as well.

By the way, I AM THE WINNER! Charring cross, Temple, HA! You had me fooled at first, I thougth it was an old Beeching rules tatic, but then I realised it was all a bluff, Temple is only closed Sundays. You were going to drop back to Embankment and straight up the northen. But with this ploy I threw you right of your tracks and now you are stuck at the Strand. Ha!

Like the shot you took at the Strand thougth. I wonder if I have shot myself in the foot :D

I got an early birthday pressie last weekend.

The Nikkor 60mm 2.8 micro lens.

I wanted to stun you all with the fantastic shots I've been able to produce with it but I haven't taken any fantastic shots yet! This one isn't too bad though.

Thanks ercolano for your advice :-)

Eurydice said 3 years ago 2/12/2009 10:58:45 PM EDT

Cool apple there, Andromeda, word of advice.. if you want to avoid it going brown .. brush a little lemon juice or vinegar on it.. the flesh will stay nice and white. :-)

congrats on the new lens :-)

Guys ice fishing on the Bay.

I shot one of those bridge things...I kind of like it.

This is a little waterfall nearby. I've shot it many times from different angles and I'm never happy with the outcome. Very frustrating. This is just a straight on shot to show it to you. Any suggestions?

An angle with diagonals in it?

How is the light, can it be caught in morning evening light (my hunch is that is midday winter sun and it is north facing)? If it is in the shade how about trying to get it on a misty morning with diffused light and a slow exposure so it's all mystical.

By the way, I love the blue glow in the viaduct.

The ice fisherman, they seem so small. Is this ice solid? It would look lovely to go on the far side of them on the lake with the mountains towering behind them, maybe!

Yeah I thought of that when I was leaving. My shot is facing east. It needs to be in a different light. Every time I shoot it, it looks boring to me.

By the way, I love the blue glow in the viaduct.

Yeah, I don't know why that occurred.
(It's a 4-lane highway above.)

Yeah, I talked with one of them and the ice is 2 feet thick.
I thought of going out on the ice and shooting back. Next time. :)

Not necessarily. Imagine you were more to the side and you had water sweeping away in the forground, as you do now, but finishing lowwer in the image in a sweeping arc wit the water plunging in at an angle from a perpendicular angle. Yeah, OK, it's easy to say.......

ercolano said 3 years ago 2/13/2009 5:30:10 PM EDT

Yeah, I don't know why that occurred.

Probably sun being diffused in water vapour from damp ground/water/ice/whatever that it is shining on.

Northman - I love that bridge shot!

A couple of shots from Theatreland in London as I was wasting a few minutes! Shot with my D80 which now travels around with me in my work bag! :-)
