we have video tags! Use [ Video] and [ /video] (without the spaces) to put the video in your post.

Also why don't you give us some background on how you got here and what Quartz Lab is! Let's make this a conversation and not just a link dump.

What a great interview! And YAY for plugging worth! Sounds like you are in a show, so, got anymore info for us? How'd you get into the local scene?

Mostly because the video is just a big ad, and distorted.

KWartZlab (kitchener waterloo artz lab)

is a hacker space where you can buy a membership and then you have access to the warehouse space, the tools, machining stuff, so you can do big messy projects at someone else's house, and you can still use your garage for the car, or live in small apartment, and still make crap like this, and stay married:

(it's all wired up too, for sound, lights, shooting, etc) . It is a costume, around an electric wheelchair. Second shot is of geeks drooling as the costume is explained. Some art on the wall.

They have a small gallery as well. I am using it for the month of August. My partner is a member so he doesnt' have to fight with me to clean the house.

The book is something I am writing to showcase local artists. I have been looking for 100 people to fill up 100 pages. For the most part it is networking for me, but for everyone else it is a chance to be seen . I have gotten a lot of tremendous stuff actually. It is fun to walk into an big gallery and do stuff for them, instead of cowering in fear and asking to display stuff. I am their FRIEND now. People who see you as an equal start to USE you for favours, like putting you on the radio, or making you show art... murahaha. (A 100 page book is not a piece of cake though...I budgeted about 500 hours for it and I will hit that pretty hard.) We are planning a party for launch and I got invited back to plug that too. It should be fun with 100 freaks in the same room. Little old ladies, tattoo billboards, students, old men, punks, housewives, all artists of every variety.

That sounds great! We used to have a space like that in NYC. My friends lived in this giant basement, and at least half of it was given over to a shop/studio space. I miss that. And all the tools, I mean really, i have no easy access to a table saw at this point.

Nice interview Soli. I hope this brought you a lot of traffic AND that you get a great turnout for the opening.

KWartZlab sounds like a great institution - and serves many purposes beyond showcasing artists' work and providing a work space.

All my life, I always wanted to be somebody. Now I see that I should have been more specific.

Next time I'm in K/W, I would love to check out KWartZlab. Of course, the last time I was in K/W, I was 6 years old, so there may be some lag-time.

KWartZlab sounds like an absolutely fantastic place (plus, any effort to make a working DALEK gets my vote); an artist's playspace. Have a great launch, solipsism.

Local artists, eh?
Oh btw, do you know Dan Kim? (Some NSFW stuff on the site)
He's from Toronto and I think he went to Waterloo U.

(no I don't know him personally. Just came to my mind)

Why?

there are hacker spaces in many cities in the US and canada OZ and europe. They just had a visit from a nomad visiting them all. He started in san francisco and drove around. we were #52 he had been to. so there may be one in your town.

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW Thank you Soli! ! ! ! ! !

There ARE several close to me. The closest one is pretty bare-bones but it just opened 38 days ago!

There is one 3 hours away that is like my dream come true. And for the real dreamers in us, they have a CNC mill, full sized. This, alone, makes this worth a trip down for a couple of days.
