Hello everyone. I have been on worth1000 for a while now as a spectator. But lately i have been wanting to participate in contests myself. The only problem is, I have no knowledge of photoshop or graphic designing or anything remotely related to these topics. My goal is to create a 3d image and maybe add effects to an existing photo. As for now, I have no idea what softwares/programmes I need or how many, or what i should do as a total beginner. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks a lot.
Photoshop, as the name says, is the best program for adding effects to photo's. But Worth1000 has a free program for you to use: aviary. For 3d images, there are several programs out there, some of them are specialized in certain aspects, like autocad which is good to make machines, houses and stuff while others are good to make monsters etc. Illustrator and Photoshop also have a very basic 3d modification set.You can find it by clicking 'options' next to your username on the top right on this site. Then afterwards click tools. You can experiment with that too.I would say, try reading some of the tutorials you can find here and on the web, since you can go very far with each program and there's a lot of info to be found on the web as well.
Thanks very much for your reply. I have had a look at a few tutorials but its hard for me to understand some of the terms they are using. It also complicates matters further for me that there is no mention of what software is being used. But I am going to start with aviary as you suggested. If i wanted to create a 3d image of a person from scratch, what sofware would you recommend?
Your best bet is to enter a couple of contests and seek help through the fx mentorship program. I am a mentor myself and can contest that the program offers an incredible one one one work through of entries that can rapidly change upr your status through through knowledge of the hidden tools of PS!
First off, if you are looking to alter images, you need to banish the "3d" thing from your mind for now. What you see in our FX contests is not 3d, and 3d software is not used.Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and Aviary is where you should focus your efforts. Learning 3d software like AutoCAD, Microstation or Blender to do image manipulation is akin to learning upholstery to fix cars. Sure if the seats are torn it might help, but that's about 1% of fixing a car.
Qofcheez, I have never used photoshop before so i dont think i am anywhere near ready enough to enter any sort of contest. Is there any other way to get help from this fx mentorship programme?Arsidubu, Like i said i have no knowledge of where to start so this is the kind of advice i am looking for. So I am not going to focus on 3d anymore. Would u be able to tell me if i can download Aviary to my laptop? Coz i just went on it and as far as i could see its an online programme which u cant download. Thanks

Aviary is browser-based. If you are looking for free downloadable software you can try gimp

I was going to offer advice, but you guys pretty well got it wrapped up, lol.I guess one thing I can add is, start with the simple basic tools of photoshop and master them before branching out to complex tools. It's amazing what can be accomplished without any fancy filters or plugins....and start by entering the beginners contests so you're not totally deflated when you come in last place by entering an advanced contest....Unless you're a natural at it....which is always possible...good luck!
dravreh > Acquire Photoshop > LoL ...very important step !
I don't know if you have seen this but I'm surprised it has not been posted here.Beginner ChoppingGreat part about these is you can do anything you want. You can use Aviary or Gimp will work too.
Thanks dravreh! I would be on a better position at the ranking if I had read it before!
Well you did the right choice by coming to Worth 1000 :)...I would suggest using a trial version of Photoshop to see whats up usually the Help section in Photoshop explains the basics and what tool does what. Once you get the hang of whats what, than Google "Photoshop Tutorials" do get creative with the search engine to get better results :). After that let your inner creativity float and surprise us all.B]
My advice, once you have 'aquired photoshop' ;), would be to play around with the tools and see what they do. Learn the name of each tool and try it out so that you can see the effect. Then try some simple tutorials. This way you will be able to understand which tools they are talking about and the effect they give.
Learn and use keyboard shortcuts. They will pay you back with time saved, a valuable commodity where deadlines are a factor.
A great (and FREE!) place to start is to click on the "Options" drop down menu up there at the top right of your screen, select "Tools" and check out the Aviary Image Editor :D
or just scroll right down to the bottom of any page ;)

Yeah but if you master a 3d program such as 3ds max you can create photorealistic stuff with perfect lighting, shadows, materials, reflections in a manner Photoshop can never achieve. When you work in Photoshop you assume reflections should be like this, you assume shadows should cast in some direction but you can never be 100% sure. You're just trying to fake it to look as close as possible. If you know both Photoshop and 3ds Max you would have much more possibilities and better results if you can take advantage of it. I'm a bigginer in 3dsMax and I like it's options but it's hard to learn IMO.I found a great interior design some guy did in maxhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Pye_NPFUuQ
1. Like everyone has said play around with the tools to see what they do, let them become your friends.2.Look at tutorials(youtube videos are great as you can see what they are doing and the tools they use to do it).3. Play around with idea and practiseThis is how i have learnt to to it and I still do these things to learn more. But none major piece of advice I will give you is start with basic things and then build up your skills from there
