This thread will be a lot less whiny than the title indicates :p.

I've been thinking about this for a long time. Most of the times when I enter a contest here, the same pattern occurs:
The first twelve hours of the worth-day my entry will advance in the rankings.
The last twelve hours of the worth-day my entry will fall down in the rankings.
Over a 3-day voting period, that means my entry will go up, down, up, down, up and finally down again (though the changes the last day is usually very small or non-existent).

Or put in another word: When europeans are asleep, I loose. When americans are asleep, I win. Obviously, my fellow Swedes are voting for me ;).

I'm curious: is this just a random pattern that occured by chance, or are there large differences in taste between continents? And what, if so, constitutes this difference?

I've often wondered the same thing, this is my theory...

Hrs 1-6:
The 1st to come on-line are the Europeans, starting with the humpers (the humpers are always 1st to vote so they can have a turn at the top to show their mates) their karma is nothing, but still enought to dictate some order. Your entries are always very good, therefore you are going to be voted down.

Hrs 6-12:
Next on-line are the European fair-voters, they've gotten to work, had their coffee, and start voting properly. They have more karma than the humpers, so just a few of their votes and your entry goes up again.

Hrs 12-18:
Next up the American humpers, theres plenty of them, perhaps enough to undo the European Fair-voters's efforts, your entry goes down again.

Hrs 18-24:
American fair-voters, plenty of them too (probably the majority of voter?) see above.

Next day: same thing on a lesser scale. etc

:)

It is however nice to sometimes see on the leaderboards an entry which has obviously been a big hit with the voters from the 1st vote to the last, when there is no number in the "change" column, like this contest for instance

You have all forgotten the influence of the kiwis and aussies, who, of course, have first crack at voting.

It's never helped me at all, though :(

In the early voting, the positions mean nothing. After all, if only one person votes on 100 entries, there will be many with 7s, many with 6s and many with 5s (say). How can the system put them in any kind of ranking order? You may have the third best score (along with many others), and be stated as rank 27, 50 or even 80! And even when two or three other people weigh in their opinions, if they are voting in the same sort of way, it will take some time for the subtle effects of karma to distinguish one score from another so that rankings can have any meaning at all.

The first 12 hours of voting is always a nonsense for the rankings, no matter WHO is casting those votes.

At least that's what I have found.

Yep I'm bored but here I have taken the last photo you entered "Rough" and put the voting in order they were cast.

You may not believe it but the same thing happens on the other side of the pond. Entries move up and down depending on who is awake and which time zone has been awake. As the day moves across then time zones here in the U.S. there is movement in ranking. No matter what, with the Karma system as it is, the cream does rise to the top in the end.

Oh, you can tell which image has been shot by a Swede, it is the one that everyone has an opinion on and people get confused by subtleness of it... or something like that, I know because I am 1/2 Swede and the other part has a lot of German in there.... so I see the subtleness but the German demands the exactness... and then the Irish part steps in and says " I need a drink". Life is difficult for those of us who are so mixed. ;-p

I raise your nerdiness by puting them in order AND calculating the average score of AM and PM-voters.

The AM-voters had a total of 2216 karma and gave me 15071 weighted votes, an average of 6,801.
The PM-voters had a total of 1921 karma and gave me 124000 weighted votes, an average of 6,455.
Of course those numbers should be compared with the average AM and PM-votes of everyone else in the contest, as to establish ranking. You do that millgage? ;)

I would think they do. different cultures, ways of life and much different ways to look at life.

But right now I have to leave work and go home. I'll get on those averages right quick for ya.

starting with the humpers

With the new change in the voting system, I don't think the term karma humpers really applies any more. Sadly, I think some people have discovered what I call the "low spread loophole". This is where they "spread" their votes like they're supposed to, but along the bottom 1/2 of the scale and continue to gain karma.

CraigMc said
their karma is nothing

Sadly, this is no longer the case. If you look back through the recent vote history of contests, you will see there are people with substantial karma voting (IMO, based on the star guide & final score/placement of photos) low on photos. If you look at the chart millgage made, MasterGnu got a 4 vote from someone with 89k & and one from a max 175k. Thankfully, we have the juror/mod/PV's votes help counteract that, but it still hurts the final score. I know there has to be "wiggle room" for personal tastes, opinions, etc., but I, personally, find it more satisfactory to vote on the high end of the scale when a photo deserves it. I try to follow the guides on the stars when it comes to the technical quality of the photo and then punch up a vote or leave it depending on my personal taste of the subject.

The first 12 hours of voting is always a nonsense for the rankings, no matter WHO is casting those votes.

LOL... Day 1 of vote: The Rabbit Hole! Seriously though, I totally agree with that. I've had photos bounce around as much as 20-30 ranks with score changes of as little as 0.3.

If they hadn't before, they have now :)

I wonder if it's possible/feasible to have a report box, pop up when someone votes a 1 or 2, where the voter has to report the image (which if it's genuinely that bad, should be reported). This may stop some lowballers if they know they are generating a 'report entry' when they try to vote low. And also it would be a log showing if certain users regularly vote excessively low

My images tend to get a wide range of scores I get some 10's and some 4's on the same image and full range in-between. However I am OK with that as my images aren't for everybody. :D

I prefer to have a strong reaction, either positive or negative, then I believe my image is successful. I consider the images that just get a range of middle scoring votes 5-7 to be boring and probably need more work. Then again I am not concerned with my HOF status or any of that, I just like making images that please me, if anyone else likes them then that is just icing on the cake.

I know this is the Photo forum but of course the same thing happens in the FX contests as well. I have found that my chops will hold well until about 10:00 am (Eastern time zone). From about 10:00 till 11:30ish they will be low balled and then it takes till about 4:00 in the afternoon just to get back to where it was. Happens almost every time.
I have watched how some voters will vote the good stuff very low and the bad stuff high so that their average vote is still within the normal range and doesn't attract much attention that way.

Seriously though, that is the "slinky" effect of voting. Up. Down. Up. Down. I see it in a much broader range in photography contests though than in any other arena, in my opinion. Just keep creating what you love to do. :)

No, just different taste levels when it comes to "eating" pickled herring. :puke:

The pics I saw you post in another thread on pickled herring were awesome photos.

Speaking as a Merkun, I must say that it's the odor. Yes, here in Merkuh, the odor of the submitter comes out through any open USB port and well, Gnu's tend to smell like gnus.

edit to add: seriously, in any comp I enter, it's the last twelve hours that count because that's usually when the heavy hitters (jurors) vote.

Reading all your theories, maybe there should be a viewing time before voting CAN take place, give voters time to reflect on how they should vote. I view all entries before voting on any, then vote first on the ones I like best and working down the pics to the lowest.
