Known as the Highland cow.
Native only to the Scottish Highlands.
Although, the average Highland cow weighs around 1000-1200 pounds,
this one is not average and is estimated to weigh over 4000 pounds.... two tons.
More than some of the trucks we drive.
The Highland cow is the oldest known cattle breed in existence.
Despite their long horns, they are gentle and easily handled.
They are known for their mild disposition, hardiness
in adverse weather conditions
and strong resistance to disease.
This one, named Bodan, has what is known as "gigantism",
caused by excess growth hormone secretion as associated with
multiple endocrine neoplasia.
Bodan is 10 years old and will probably live another 10 years.
Bodan is pictured here with his beloved owner, Shaun Duncan.
Bodan is the king of the rain-soaked ranch in the Highlands of Scotland,
roughly 30 miles south of Loch Ness.
(Please note, Shaun is a big boy and weighs 278 lbs and stands 6' 4" tall)
