Gave him a new paint job and a new home. If anyone has any tips on how to make the paint look more like paint (without making him look old...would defeat the point), that'd be great.

The doll looks a little too defined for me especially around the head area - even when viewing full it didnt change much, but I think you made a wonderful effort :)

You know why he looks flat? Lack of shading and highlights.
Take the dodge tool, set it to a soft brush, midtones, about 20% exposure, and gently brush down the center of his arm, the top right of his forehead, until you get a soft highlight. Then give the down side of his head more shading to add depth.
The colors coming thru the slats is a wise detail. Good going there!
