Author's Note:

In Japanese folklore, kitsune (fox spirits) possess magical powers, included the ability to assume human form. Stories often tell of kitsune using this ability to trick hapless humans. In particular, kitsune are known for impersonating beautiful women, and common belief in medieval Japan was that any woman encountered alone could be a fox.
