“Captivating. A real page-turner!” -Kirkus Book Review.
Timing is critical in the advertising world. At the largest marketing company in New York, the corporate motto is: “If we don’t meet the deadline, then we don’t make headlines!” For the firm of Arnoldson, Vintner, and Igby, timing is not only critical, it can mean the difference between landing a $10 million client or being handed your walking papers. Or worse.
“I couldn’t put it down. Whenever I did, the ink from the pages would stain my fingertips.” -NY Times Book Review.
The sweat traces the contour of his temple and begins to pool in his ear. Associate Director of Marketing Daniel Straw steals a glance at the clock, knowing full well that the meeting with Axelrod Motors will take place in two hours. Panic begins to set in. Not willing just yet to accept failure, he reaches for the phone and hurriedly punches the digits for the print department.
“I can’t explain it, Mr. Straw. I’ve never seen anything like this before. The whole operation is in jeopardy.”
Straw loosens his collar as the air in his office seems suddenly thin. He struggles to breathe. “Tim, you’re the best troubleshooter we have. If you can’t fix it, what are we to do?”
“There’s only one person who can save us now. I think it’s time you made the call, sir.”
“What a neat cover!” -Oprah Book Club.
Jake McCabe is lost. He slouches in his tiny studio, hunched over the corporate newsletter that he stole from the dustbin. Staring at the worn photo of the Employee of The Month at Arnoldson, Vintner, and Igby, Jake loses himself in the eyes of Cara Wise, the girl who got away. If only the people from the marketing firm would need his services again, he could redeem himself. He could make up for that incident at the water-cooler, when he blew his one chance with Cara.
Engrossed in his musings, Jake fails to notice the telephone until the third ring. Using his powerful arms to toss aside the clutter of paperwork on his desk, he finds the phone and picks up the receiver. He can hear the labored breathing on the other end of the line. With a smile in his voice as sure as the one on his face, he says, “Jake McCabe, Copier Repairman. Is that you, Mr. Straw?”
