The Hum Above Our Heads by KatDanson
5th place entry in Bonus: Poetry: In the Air

The hum above our heads is so unnerving
A vehicle of aliens unseen
Has stopped abruptly after swoops and swerving
And now is still, uneasily serene

Why does it hang above us so intently
This ominous ship halted in the sky?
And if it lands, will we be treated gently
Or by unheard-of weapons will we die?

The days go by, the weeks, the months, the years now
While hangs above so close yet out of reach
The outerspace conveyance that we've learned how
To think of as a harmless humming leech

It hangs above, no change of any kind yet
We wonder, will we ever get to know
The ones who built this awe-inspiring space jet
And will it ever land, or someday go?

Departure was as sudden as arrival
What was above us now is there no more
No humming and no fear for our survival
The silence strange, this silence we adore

We still awake from dreams of death or torture
Brought on by anxious years of the unknown
The meaning of the visit? Well, we're not sure
But one thing we have learned -- we're not alone

Was this an observational adventure
Or merely an experiment to see
How beings on this planet deal with nature --
Or was it just a spaceman on a spree?

Though gone for many decades, I still worry
That someday they'll return and then decree
That Earth belongs to them (whoever "they" be)
And never more to Man -- not you nor me
