Author's Note: Gilbert Stuart had painted well over one-hundred portraits of George Washington, and he was known to take certain liberties when doing so. In 'The Athenaeum Portrait', for instance, Washington's eyebrows and eyelashes were deliberately left out. "The decision was basically made because when people look at the painting I want them to instantly know who they are looking at..." In other words, he wanted it to be as plain as the... well, you know. This was the last time Washington allowed his portrait to be painted.
